What room correction actually does

The included microphone measures a test tone from every speaker at several positions around your seating area. From those measurements, the system automatically sets four things: speaker distances (so sound from every speaker arrives at your ears at the same time), output levels (so no speaker is louder or quieter than it should be), crossover points (where bass duties hand off to the subwoofer), and an equalization curve that corrects for peaks and dips caused by your room's shape, furniture, and reflective surfaces.

None of this replaces good speaker placement — it corrects what placement can't fix (room acoustics), not what placement handles better (imaging and soundstage). The two work together.

Audyssey (Denon / Marantz)

Audyssey is the most widely deployed room correction system, standard across most Denon and Marantz receivers. It comes in tiers: base MultEQ, mid-tier MultEQ XT, and flagship MultEQ XT32, which uses far more filter precision and typically ships on higher-end models. XT32 is generally regarded as the strongest built-in correction system available on mainstream, affordably priced receivers.

Yamaha YPAO

YPAO takes a somewhat different philosophy than Audyssey, focusing heavily on analyzing early reflections to build a more natural, spacious soundfield rather than purely flattening frequency response. It's a musical-sounding, competent system, though generally considered less technically sophisticated than Dirac Live or the top Audyssey tier.

Dirac Live

Dirac Live is widely regarded as the current gold standard in consumer room correction. Unlike systems that only address frequency response, Dirac Live uses mixed-phase filtering to correct both frequency response and timing errors — the way different frequencies arrive at your ears at slightly different times due to room reflections. It's found built into select receivers (notably several Onkyo and Pioneer models) or as a paid software upgrade on others. Manual calibration for purists

Some experienced enthusiasts prefer to set distances and levels manually with a tape measure and an SPL meter, then use automatic correction only for the EQ curve, or skip automatic EQ altogether in favor of a full-range calibration using tools like REW (Room EQ Wizard) and a measurement microphone. This route takes real time and a learning curve, but it gives full control over which frequency ranges get corrected and by how much — useful once you understand your room well enough to know where automatic systems get it slightly wrong.

Re-run room correction any time you move a speaker, add a speaker (like new Atmos height channels), rearrange furniture, or change flooring or window treatments — all of these measurably change how your room reflects sound. Even without any changes, re-running it every year or two is a reasonable habit, especially in rooms where you're still fine-tuning placement over time.
