A great projector setup and a great TV can both deliver an incredible movie night — but they get there in completely different ways, with different strengths, weaknesses, and rooms they're actually suited for.
This is where projectors win decisively. A high-quality 100-inch TV costs many times more than a good laser projector paired with a 100-inch screen, and the cost gap only widens as you go bigger. If screen size is your top priority and budget matters, a projector delivers far more inches per dollar than any TV on the market.
This is the single biggest factor that should drive your decision, more than budget or brand preference. TVs generate their own light and stay watchable in a bright room. Projectors bounce light off a screen, and ambient light from windows or overhead fixtures washes out contrast and color, sometimes dramatically.
Modern laser projectors paired with an ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen — a screen surface engineered to reflect light coming from the projector's angle while absorbing light from other directions — handle moderate ambient light far better than older lamp-based setups. But no projector fully matches a TV's picture in direct sunlight or a brightly lit room. If your space can't be reasonably darkened, that alone may settle the decision in favor of a TV.

For pure contrast, black levels, and HDR peak brightness, a good OLED or high-end LED TV still outperforms even an excellent laser projector — that's simply a function of emissive versus reflected light. Projectors have closed much of that gap in recent years through higher lumen counts and ALR screen technology, and in a properly darkened room, a good laser projector can deliver a genuinely cinematic image that rivals what smaller premium TVs produce. But if outright reference picture quality in mixed lighting is the priority, TVs remain the technical leader.
Many projectors historically carried noticeably higher input lag than gaming-focused TVs, which matters for competitive or fast-paced games. That gap has narrowed as more projectors add dedicated low-latency gaming modes, but it's still worth checking a specific model's gaming-mode input lag spec before buying if this matters to you — don't assume parity with TVs by default.

If you're buying a projector today, a laser light source is worth prioritizing over a traditional lamp — the difference in long-term cost and hassle is significant, and laser has become the standard at the mid-range and above.
