Manufacturers advertise power numbers because they're an easy marketing hook, but wattage is one of the least useful specs for predicting how a receiver will actually sound in your room. What matters far more:
For most rooms under 3,000 cubic feet with reasonably efficient speakers, 80–100 watts per channel is plenty. Chasing bigger wattage numbers while ignoring sensitivity and impedance is one of the most common — and most expensive — beginner mistakes.
Every HDMI port on a modern receiver isn't created equal, and this is where a lot of buyers get burned by a spec sheet that says "HDMI 2.1" without clarifying which ports actually support it.
If you game at 4K/120Hz, confirm the exact number of full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs before buying — don't assume every port matches the headline spec.
Almost every modern receiver includes an automatic calibration system that uses an included microphone to measure your room and correct for it. As a quick summary: Dirac Live is generally the most accurate, correcting both frequency response and timing; Audyssey MultEQ XT32 (Denon/Marantz) is the strongest built-in option on affordable gear; YPAO and AccuEQ are solid but less advanced.
"Pre-outs" are unpowered outputs that send a line-level signal to an external amplifier instead of using the receiver's own built-in amp for that channel. Even a 7-channel receiver with 11-channel processing and pre-outs lets you add a 2-channel external amp later for height speakers, without replacing the whole receiver. If there's any chance you'll expand your system in the next few years, prioritizing pre-out availability over raw channel count on the receiver itself can save you a full re-purchase down the line.
Most current receivers include built-in support for AirPlay, Chromecast, Bluetooth, and at least one multi-room audio ecosystem (Sonos, HEOS, MusicCast, or similar). These are genuinely convenient day to day, but they shouldn't be a tiebreaker over channel count, power, or room correction quality — a phone, streaming stick, or smart speaker can always fill this gap later; missing speaker channels cannot.
A receiver combines a preamp/processor and a multichannel amplifier in one box. "Separates" split those into a standalone AV preamp/processor and one or more dedicated amplifiers. Separates make sense once you need more clean power than a receiver's amp section can deliver — typically larger rooms, less efficient speakers, or listeners who push systems hard at reference volume. For the vast majority of home theaters, a good receiver is simpler, cheaper, and entirely sufficient.
