What object-based audio means

Traditional surround sound is channel-based: a sound engineer mixes audio into a fixed set of channels — left, right, center, surrounds — and every system plays those exact channels regardless of how many speakers it actually has. If a movie was mixed for 7.1 and you only own 5.1, something gets lost or awkwardly folded down.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X work differently. Instead of channels, the mix is made of individual objects — a helicopter, a raindrop, a line of dialogue — each carrying metadata describing where it should sound like it's coming from in 3D space, including overhead. Your receiver reads that metadata and decides, in real time, which of your actual speakers should play each object based on your specific setup. That's what makes both formats scale cleanly from a 3-speaker soundbar to a 24-speaker dedicated theater room without a new mix for each.

Dolby Atmos basics

Dolby Atmos launched in cinemas in 2012 and arrived in homes in 2014, and it has become the dominant object-based format by a wide margin. It's the format you're most likely to encounter on streaming services, 4K Blu-ray discs, and virtually every soundbar and receiver sold today. Atmos also extends beyond movies into Apple Music and Amazon Music's spatial audio catalogs, sometimes marketed as "Dolby Atmos Music."

DTS:X basics

DTS:X, developed by DTS (now part of Xperi), takes the same object-based concept but doesn't mandate a fixed speaker configuration the way earlier formats did, giving installers more flexibility with unusual room layouts. DTS:X is common on 4K Blu-ray discs and supported by most modern receivers and many soundbars, though its footprint on streaming services is considerably smaller than Atmos. A newer variant, DTS:X Pro, extends support up to 32 speakers for large, high-end installations.

Which one should you care about?

In practice, this isn't really a decision you make. Virtually every AV receiver and Atmos-capable soundbar sold today decodes both formats automatically, and the same speaker setup plays either one — your receiver detects which format a specific title was mixed in and decodes accordingly. What actually determines your experience is the quality of the mix for the specific movie or show you're watching, and increasingly, whether the streaming service delivers the lossless version of the track at all rather than a compressed stereo fallback.

What actually matters more

Atmos and DTS:X on soundbars

Many soundbars advertise Atmos or DTS:X support using upward-firing drivers that bounce sound off the ceiling to simulate height, rather than dedicated in-ceiling speakers. This genuinely works to a degree — noticeably better than a traditional flat soundbar — but it's a compromise compared to real height channels in a full surround system.
